With so many incredible courses in the area, finding the best golf courses in Surrey can often be a struggle. In fact, many of the best golf courses in England lie in this beautiful leafy county, which is why it has proved a popular destination for a golf break. Not to mention it is just a stone’s throw from London.
Worplesdon Golf Club, 16th hole
The layout at Worplesdon Golf Club calls for great thought on shot placement, particularly on the testing shorter holes. The combination of some of the best greens in Surrey and unique, individual holes, with the addition of a tranquil setting so close to London, sees this course sit in 30th position in the Top 100 Golf Courses in England. As it is on the Surrey Sandbelt, the course tends to remain open for play all-year-round and does not bring temporary greens or tees into play at any point in the year.
Walton Heath, Old Course
Famous for its rich golfing and political history, Walton Heath is one of the most highly regarded golf clubs in the UK. It is also home to the outstanding Old Course, which is number 10 in the Top 100 Golf Courses in England. Its sheer length combined with a Scottish links-style test makes this heathland both a physically and mentally demanding golf course. If you make it through the first six holes unscathed you should be proud of yourself, as they are among the hardest opening holes you will find anywhere in the world.
As one of Britain’s finest heathland courses, and sitting 33rd in the Top 100 Golf Courses in England, Hindhead is without a doubt a golf course you should play while on a golf break in Surrey. Located just off the A3, this 18-hole course measures 6,390-yards in one of the most glorious, natural settings in the UK. It is this natural setting that allows for such an enjoyable round of golf. The front-nine is arguably the most memorable but the back-nine also represents fine golfing territory, as you make your way through the heather strewn Ice Age valleys.
Walton Heath, New Course
Sharing the same open heathland setting as the Old Course, the New Course at Walton Heath is a fine championship challenge in its own right, and also sits inside the Top 100 Golf Courses in the UK, in 37th position. Although slightly shorter than the Old Course, the New still measures at a challenging 7,199-yards from the tips. Fowler decided to stay away from designing a similar course to the Old in order to offer golfers a different challenge. For example, the New Course sees cross-hazards come into play on at least nine of the holes compared to just four on the Old.
